The Fontana Economic History of Europe is the first comprehensive survey of the subject to make its original appearance in paperback. Volumes 1 to 4 take the story up to the beginning of the twentieth century while volumes 5 and 6 cover the most recent period
This volume, published in two parts, considers the facts, forces and concepts that have shaped the general economic life of Europe during the fifty years from 1920.
It is complemented by volume 6, Contemporary Economies which covers the same period from the point of view of individual countries. To the older elements of population, demand, labour, agriculture, finance and trade several new topics are added. In the realm of ideas there is a chapter on the Keynesian Revolution in economics and another on the concept of National Planning. On the material side the Sources of Energy are considered, as are the economic problems of Society in relation to the Environment. In the socio-economic field there is a chapter on Management and another on the Context of Science and Technology.
The appearance of the earliest chapters in pamphlet form was described by the Times Literary Supplement as an impressive first instalment… We shall have in due course a very valuable new Economic History of Europe.
