Roger J. Mannion’s latest book provides a detailed, authoritative account of the design, development and operation of Oliver Bulleid’s remarkable locomotives. The author re-examines the career of the Southern Pacifics, looks closely at the business and engineering background of the locomotives, and compares them with other designs in order to give a fresh insight into a notable aspect of railway history.

Following an introduction to the historical background, the author describes the evolution and construction of the Southern Pacifics. He explains the design requirements and the modifications made during development, and recalls the personalities involved. Reminiscences from the crews who built and operated the locomotives form a vivid and substantial part of the narrative.

Subsequent chapters look at the working life of the Southern Pacifics, from their early days through into the 1960s. The author also records later revisions to the original design, and offers a full account of the decline and eventual withdrawal of the Southern Pacifics from service.

The book gives a lucid description of the engineering aspects of the Bulleid engines, which is of particular interest. Appendices include full listings of each locomotive, its name and name changes, number, date of construction, liveries, as well as disposal dates and sites. Engineering drawings and papers and contemporary photographs support the informative text, making this a book which will appeal to transport historians and to anyone with an interest in Britain’s railways.
