The New Penguin Dictionary of Music (previously published as A New Dictionary of Music) compiled by Arthur Jacobs, a well-known music critic and Professor at the Royal Academy of Music, is a basic and comprehensive reference book. It covers orchestral, solo, choral and chamber music as well as opera and the ballet. Full and detailed entries deal with composers and their works, instruments of all sorts, orchestras, performers and conductors. Entries dealing with well-known authors whose work inspired musical composition are a new feature of this up-to-date dictionary which includes both information about the music of modern composers and the results of the considerable research that is going on into the music of the past.

This fourth edition will completely supersede its predecessors. It is longer by several hundred entries; many of the old entries have been considerably enlarged in the light of new research.
