Poverty, factory work and union activism have filled Lu Wilmott with a determination to break out, to get away. The call to Spain, at the start of the bloody muddle of its Civil War, is irresistible. Here she can become the woman she’s always wanted to be, unencumbered by her background. Signing up as a driver, Lu breaks the last link with her past and becomes Eve.

As one of the few women in charge of heavy vehicles, her work takes her close to figures of many nationalities. But it is the country and its people that have the greatest effect upon her as she falls in love with Spain. Here, worlds away from her former life, Eve encounters an old love. But there is little room now for romance. Her stamina and commitment are stretched to the limit.
