Heinrich Harrer escaped from a British internment camp in India in 1944 and walked across the Himalayas to Lhasa. He stayed for seven years, learned Tibetan, became a friend and tutor to the young Dalai Lama, and fled with him when the Chinese invaded in 1950. The book has sold millions of copies worldwide and was filmed in 1997 with Brad Pitt. With an introduction by Peter Fleming.
