Ten years have passed since Eve Freeman and Pauline Quirk left Glencove in County Wicklow for the frightening, sometimes dangerous world outside. Now they face new challenges and heartbreaks.

Eve, married to a handsome banker and the mother of Katie, has bought the run-down Glencove Hotel and embarked on the most ambitious project of her life. Or the most imprudent according to her bullying father-in-law, who is determined to put her in her place.

Eve has an unexpected ally. Lured back from exile in America by a legacy, Pauline Quirk has a surprisingly respectable new place in Glencove’s society. She becomes Eve’s business partner, and for the first time in ten years she is also drawn to a man, handsome Geoff Ryan.

But the fear that drove Pauline from Ireland returns to threaten her happiness – and perhaps even her young son – once again.

And Eve finds that being an independent businesswoman may not be so easy to reconcile with being a wife and mother.
