It's amazing that over two decades have passed since I wrote these three short sentences, when a twisted idea for a crime novel featuring a very different kind of serial-killer first popped into my head.

Twenty-five years since I created a north London copper with dubious music taste and a similarly tragic love life.

Twenty-five years and, as of this year, twenty-five novels featuring killers every bit as dark and deranged as the one he was trying to catch in this first outing.

Twenty-five years during which Tom Thorne has been indelibly marked by every murder he's had to investigate, by every victim.

But one scar is deeper than all the others.

This is where it began.
