A companion piece to Portrait of Elmbury, this book is laid in one of Elmbury’s surrounding villages; and by the same deft intermixture and balance of action and character conveys the life of the place in breadth and depth. Some of the English eccentrics who appeared in Elmbury – ‘The Colonel’ for instance, and those three scoundrels Pistol, Bardolph and Nam – are met with again here, with many new ones including the postman who writes poetry, the village drunk who recites it, the Hermit, the M.P. and the Mad Lord.
