Martha's Journey

Liverpool, 1914. Martha Rossi lives in a tenement with her husband and five children. They don’t have much to get by on and life is tough. But when Martha’s underage son, Joe, enlists in order to earn the family a little extra, she is horrified. Ignoring his mother’s pleas and protests, Joe joins the army and is dispatched to France. It is an act of selfless heroism that will cast a long shadow over his family

As telegrams carrying heartbreaking news begin to arrive from the front, and spurred on by her own grief, Martha undertakes a journey of her own – a quest that will give voice to every mother who sacrificed her son, and take her right to the door of No. 10 Downing Street.
