The Aeneid

The Aeneid is an immortal poem which embodies the glory and aspirations of Rome on a grand scale, encompassing both the nobility and the suffering of human life. Regarded as the greatest classic of Latin poetry, its influence is immeasurable and it remains at the heart of Western culture today.

Virgil takes up the tale of Aeneas near the point where Homer’s lliad had left him. Urged by the gods to fulfil his destiny, Aeneas leads the dispossessed survivors of Troy through countless trials and adventures, and visits the underworld before his final defeat of the indigenous Italian tribes led by Turnus, enables him to establish a new kingdom in central Italy.
