Germany, 1945

One winter morning, Detta, a young German woman, passes a group of exhausted British prisoners of war being forced-marched westwards through her tiny village. But one of the prisoners catches her eye and afterwards she cannot forget him. Then she receives an urgent message from the local priest: the prisoner needs her help.

Berlin, 1989

After witnessing the fall of the wall, Miranda, a British photography student flees through the rubble into the East. Trapped in an abusive relationship, she believes her one hope for escape lies with an old postcard of the village where her grandmother Detta was born. But her journey towards freedom becomes perilous as she begins to suspect she’s being followed by the Stasi…
