Not even his years as a New Orleans homicide detective could have prepared Dave Robicheaux for the condemned man’s last confession. When Johnny Massina, a convicted murderer bound for the electric chair, warns Dave he’s on somebody’s hit list, the Cajun detective is rocketed into a situation with chilling consequences.

As Dave hastens to discover whose target he’s become before he ends up dead, he takes on the murder investigation of a young black girl found dead in the Bayou swamp. The investigation leads him to a drug-dealing mafia, an ex-general with sinister connections in Nicaragua and a terrifying confrontation with the one horror he fears most of all.
