Marquand won the Pulitzer Prize in 1938 and was once called the most successful novelist in America. He's largely forgotten now, but his New England satires sit alongside John O'Hara and Sloan Wilson as the men who chronicled the WASP establishment just before it stopped mattering. Made into a 1941 MGM film starring Hedy Lamarr.
