About this book:

This illustrated history describes the bringing together of all the tramways operated by the municipalities that were within the jurisidiction of the new London Passenger Transport Board, together with the three company-owned systems which also worked within it. This is followed by chapters showing how the network and its cars were gradually formed into one huge undertaking; the plans made almost immediately to scrap many of the tramcars, some of these from smaller corporations; the beginning of a programme to convert some of the tramway mileage to trolleybus working, but, at the same time, the introduction of a programme to ”rehabilitate” a numbers of tramcars, mainly those from the L.C.C. fleet. All aspects involving the maintenance of this huge undertaking are dealt with; staffing arrangements; the large fleet of road service vehicles needed to support the network; fares and tickets; depots and works; power supplies. The way the system was abandoned is also described. Illustrated with diagrams, black and white photographs, several pages of color illustrations of tickets. Includes detailed roster with car number, year new, motors, controllers, trucks, builder of trucks, and builder of body. With foldout system map attached to rear end paper
